Georgetown – Guyana and Antigua and Barbuda recorded deaths associated with the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) over the past 24 hours as other Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries reported that some of their citizens had contracted the virus.

The Ministry of Health in Guyana said that the death toll reached 258 after a 64-year-old male from Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica) died while receiving care at a medical facility on Monday.

So far for April, 24 people have died as the country is facing a third, more deadly wave of the dreaded coronavirus.

The Ministry of Health expressed condolences to the families of those who died and said it will make every effort to provide all the necessary support during this difficult time to render any assistance needed.

In Antigua and Barbuda, the medical director at the Mount St John’s Medical Centre, Dr. Albert Duncan,, confirmed that a 76 year-old female patient had died on Monday after having tested positive for COVID-19.

“Our thoughts and condolences remain with the patient’s family and loved ones at this difficult time,” he said.

In Barbados, the island recorded four new positive cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, April 11, while six people recovered.

The new cases, which comprise two men and two women, were identified from the 220 tests conducted by the Best-dos Santos Public Health Laboratory. The number of people in isolation is 88.

Confirmed COVID-19 cases in Barbados now stand at 3 734 (1 817 females and 1 917 males), and a total of 3 613 persons have recovered. Forty-four people have died from the viral illness.

In Belize, there were no new deaths. Sixteen new cases were recorded, bringing the total active cases to 41.

The authorities said that there have been 318 deaths since the first case was diagnosed in March, last year.

In Trinidad and Tobago, the Ministry of Health said there have been 37 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total number of active cases to 520.

It said that the figures reflect samples taken from April 9 to 11.

According to the latest bulletin issued by the ministry 8 638 people have been vaccinated since the rollout of the AstraZeneca vaccine last Tuesday. It said the number of deaths remains at 146.

The ministry said the number of COVID-19 cases to date is 8 441 and 7 775 have recovered from the virus so far. The update said 68 patients are in hospital, 286 in state quarantine, four in step-down facilities, and 411 in self-isolation. (CMC)
