The alert level remains red for the La Soufriere Volcano in St Vincent.

Since the volcano began explosive eruptions on Friday, people have been evacuated, particularly those in the red zone.

According to a bulletin from the National Emergency Management Organisation (NEMO) in St Vincent today, there are 87 shelters that are now activated with more than 3 880 occupants.

More than 400 families are hosting over 2 000 people to date and registration with NEMO of people in private sheltering is continuing.

The National Emergency Operations Centre continues to be fully functional, operating on a 24- hour basis.

NEMO will continue to provide regular updates on activities at the volcano as they occur.

The University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre in Trinidad recorded another explosive eruption at 6:30 a.m. today, the 42nd anniversary of the 1979 eruption.

This was described as being less energetic than previous events. Seismic activity at La Soufrière continued the pattern established yesterday, with short bands of continuous seismic tremor interspersed with long-period earthquakes.

According to NEMO, following the latest band of tremor, at 1:30 a.m., the long-period earthquakes have steadily become more frequent. (NEMO)
