Wilkie Cumberbatch Primary School is mourning the loss of principal Jennifer Phillips.

The former senior teacher at St Paul’s Primary School, who was assigned to the Wildey, St Michael school in 2018, died yesterday after she fell ill while attending church and was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

In paying tribute to his principal, Pedro Shepherd, information technology coordinator at the school, said: “Mrs Phillips brought a newness to administration at the school and was a tower of strength for all staff, teaching and ancillary. She was also very involved in the Parent-Teacher Association and had a great relationship with everyone.

“I built up a nice working relationship with Mrs Phillips and was always available to share any advice as one of the long-standing members of the staff,” said Shepherd, who is also president of the Barbados Union of Teachers.

He added that Phillips loved teaching and her school, making sure it lacked nothing.

“Only recently she was saying to staff that she wanted to be back on the school plant as she wanted to be with her students and staff. She had extra time for students who were deemed less fortunate and had challenges with reading and comprehension; that was her strength. The staff and pupils would certainly miss her. We pray that God will take her on His wings and take her to paradise.”

Shepherd and the staff extended sincerest condolences to her children, family and friends. (AC)
