Some freighters drove away empty-handed from the Bridgetown Port on Monday morning.
Others, however, chose to wait in a long line to collect their packages, after they were told one of the sheds still had not been cleaned of volcano ash.
When a Nation team visited around 9 a.m. some of the freighters parked their vehicles and stood on the outskirts of the gate.
They said they were told they would have to wait a bit longer before they received their packages.
Shawn Belgrave turned up before 8 a.m. and he said he felt the facility should have been ready, but he was holding out hope for later today.
“I will leave here and do what I have to and then call somebody and see if they ready, because it makes no sense waiting out here for nothing,” Belgrave said.
Notices posted on the Port’s official Facebook Page on Sunday said it would return to “full operations” on Monday with the reopening of Shed 4 for commercial cargo and Shed 2 for personal effects. The facility would also continue to make container deliveries.
“Extensive clean-up of roadways and operational areas has been undertaken and efforts will continue to mitigate against the ongoing impacts of volcanic ash,” the notice continued, adding that environmental conditions would be monitored to ensure safety.
The Port was closed due to the eruption of La Soufrière in St Vincent which covered Barbados in volcano ash. (TG)
