Administration of the second dose of the coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine got underway this morning.
Co-coordinator of the National COVID-19 Vaccination Campaign, Dr Elizabeth Ferdinand, said the jab was being administered by appointment only and described the first day as a smooth process.
The first phase of the national vaccination programme for the virus, which began on February 11 and ended on March 26, was not without flaw.
People who did not have appointments had turned up at various polyclinics and administration sites to get vaccinated and this had created confusion.
“We are trying to give people appointments so that we won’t have a lot of people standing around or crowding. Today was calm because people came to the times of their appointments,” Ferdinand said.
“We also want people to not worry about getting their second appointment; they will get it before the end of May. Expect an email or a phone call if you had the first dose in the first week of the first phase; the second, third and fourth weeks will come shortly.”
Although the ash fall caused by explosive eruptions of the La Soufriere volcano in St Vincent delayed the commencement of the second phase of the vaccination programme, which was supposed to be rolled out last Saturday, Ferdinand said this phase was still scheduled to be completed by the end of May.
