BDF private on literacy mission

Private Maria Burt is a woman on a mission and her first order of business is to establish a children’s book drive which could see thousands of Barbados’ children benefit from the cause.

The 39-year-old was recently named a World Literacy Foundation Ambassador out of 2 600 applicants from 118 countries, including islands of the Caribbean and European countries.

“I feel really excited. I didn’t expect to be chosen, but after receiving the email I was really excited. Having been chosen, my first project I would like to launch is a book drive where I use social media and invite people to donate books, used and new books, and I would collect them,” she said.

During an interview in the Officer’s Mess at the Barbados Defence Force’s (BDF) St Ann’s Fort, The Garrison, St Michael headquarters, she said she would sanitise them and distribute to children’s homes to share so they too could have the opportunity to do some reading. (RA)
