The Cane Vale, Christ Church community is in shock following the apparent suicide of a teenaged father.

Reports are that Kodia “Kody” Hoyte, 19, was found hanging at his home on Tuesday night by a young family member.

Yesterday, his mother said she and the family were too upset to speak about the incident, though they did say he was the father of a one-year-old boy.

Neighbours, who declined to be identified, described Hoyte as a helpful, hard-working youth who was usually friendly.

“He was my handy guy; I could depend on him no matter the situation. He used to do anything for me and for everyone in the community. I will miss him,” one woman said, adding she last saw him a few weeks ago and he seemed happy.

“He always used to have a joyous spirit. I can’t believe he’s gone. When I heard, I was so shaken, I couldn’t eat,” she said.

Another neighbour said Hoyte was a very mannerly person. She last saw him a week ago.

“He came and asked me for Panadols. I remember seeing him up and down with his sheep; he would talk to you very friendly. I’m very sad to hear he’s dead,” she said.

A young woman said Kodia had a “good vibe” but there was more under the surface.

“Every young person has their issues, though I never saw him depressed. Still, I expect he wanted somebody to talk to after his grandmother died. I don’t think he could express himself,” she said.

She said she was shocked to find out about the tragedy as she was not “expecting him to do anything like this”. (CA)
