Phase III of the Constitution River project started yesterday, with the bridge at Constitution Road, between John Beckles Drive and Nursery Drive being closed.
The project will run to May 28 and motorists are being encouraged to use alternative roads into The City.
Chief executive officer Joyann Haigh of Haigh Communications Inc., consultants for the Barbados Tourism Investment Inc., executors of the project, told the DAILY NATION that if motorists found other roads it would ease the flow of traffic in and around The City.
“It is a major artery into Bridgetown, but we are making some adjustments and will conduct a pilot project [last night] with buses to see if they could ease some of the traffic with the cut-off of the major artery.
“We can’t change the minibuses because they have to be in town. But we ask motorists who don’t have any business in town, but are using it as a conduit to get from south to west, we’re asking [them] to find alternative routes to allow for PSVs (Public Service Vehicles), buses and people who actually do business in the area, schoolchildren and those going to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital to be in Bridgetown,” she said.
