COVID-19 sensitisation training for hotel workers

The Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. (BTMI) is continuing COVID-19 sensitisation training exercises with frontline workers in the tourism sector.

Manager, Product Development (Innovation & Strategy), Terry Vanterpool-Fox, while speaking during a session at Hilton Barbados this morning, said that the programme last year was a success as many workers in the transport sector were trained and received certification.

She said there were more than 1 400 transport providers, including taxi operators and public service vehicle drivers and more than 700 were trained.

Vanterpool-Fox said there was evidence that the sessions were meaningful and producing positive results. She pointed out that during a workshop last month the head of the COVID Monitoring Unit Ronald Chapman announced that none of the taxi operators had a record of transferring or contracting COVID and were among the cleanest transport providers.

“We are pleased with that track record,” she said.

This morning’s workshop was for hotel workers.

Vanterpool-Fox said it made sense to train hotel workers as they were in direct contact with visitors and some hotels were being established as quarantine facilities and isolation centres.

She said these workers would receive a certification document to show they had COVID-19 training.

Today’s exercise was the third training session and Vanterpool-Fox said fewer than 100 hotel workers were trained so far. (SB)
