More Barbadians should assist individuals who are living with non communicable diseases (NCDs) and mental health challenges, says director of Massy Foundation David Neilands.
He made that suggestion on Thursday during the presentation of a $30 360 cheque to Cancer Support Services at Dayrells Road, Christ Church.
During the presentation, Neilands congratulated Cancer Support Services on their 25 years of service and commended the charity for continuing to work despite the negative effects of coronavirus (COVID-19).
“Coming out of this scenario, it has curtailed your actions as well as the actions of others but we need to understand what we are dealing with in Barbados. NCDs are a huge issue and you can’t talk about them enough and we should all be supporting,” he said.
Neilands said the situation was only compounded by an increase in mental health concerns, which he suggested Barbadians needed just as much help with.
“This is your 25th year and it just shows the level of involvement in Barbadian society for people in need. People in need are not just those who suffer but the people who live and interact with those who suffer.
“And as we all know, mental issues have become a major issue during this lockdown and it’s really commendable, and the Massy Foundation is honoured to support your work,” he added.
Executive director of Cancer Support Services Jan Linton accepted the cheque on behalf of the charity.
She expressed gratitude to Massy Foundation for the donation which will go towards the purchasing of post mastectomy bras and prostheses.
“We are humbled that you can present this cheque to us today and be assured that we will assist patients in need,”Linton said. (TG)
