Barbadian ace Zane Maloney finished sixth in race 2 at the Circuit Paul Ricard on Sunday, to add to his fourth placed finish on Saturday. The teenager has enjoyed a brilliant two-week journey in France, finishing second and first in the two races at Monte Carlo last Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

Maloney is now a not-too-distant second in the drivers’ standings with 87 points. Swiss driver Gregoire Saucy, who collected two wins at Paul Ricard, remains at the summit of the standings with 110 points to his name.

Despite unfavourabe results in qualifying over the weekend, Maloney was able to make up good ground, especially in race 2, to collect valuable points for himself and his team.

The 2019 British Formula 4 champion completed the fifth fastest lap in Saturday’s qualifying and registered a time of 1 minute 58.397 seconds. He was able to maintain fifth place from starting grid to finish line and collected points for fourth place due to Saucy’s retroactive disqualification.

Sunday presented a different situation for Maloney as he finished with the tenth fasted time in qualification. His time of 1 minute 58.86 seconds was five-tenths slower than Saturday’s, but he was able to replicate his Saturday speed, particularly on the final lap, and consolidated sixth position.

Maloney returns home tomorrow from France and will spend time recuperating before heading off to the Netherlands on the weekend of June 19 to 20 at the Circuit Zandvoort. (NM)
