Lucille Clarke got an early birthday gift yesterday when she was honoured as the oldest active fish vendor at the Berinda Cox Fish Market in Oistins, Christ Church.

Clarke, who turns 86 tomorrow, was recognised yesterday for her 72 years of service in the fishing industry.

“I’m happy to have lived to see this age. I am happy to see my friends, children and grandchildren, my aunt, my nieces and nephews. I’m happy to see everybody,” she told the DAILY NATION.

“I worked very hard and I’m still working. The people who are hawkers now are living happy. Before there was this fancy market, I used to walk all about with a big basket up top my head selling fish and I started at 14 years old. I used to sell sprats and frays first, 50 flying fish and then whole dolphins, and when I finish get them sell, I would go back and get more fish to sell to finish the day.” (SB)
