The elderly woman who was injured in a fire at her Christ Church home last month has died.

Cecily Cole, 93, of 2nd Avenue Worthing, suffered burns to the back, hands and feet and was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital after the blaze on May 14. Larry Bethel, 80, sustained similar injuries and was said to be still hospitalised.

The fire, which started in the kitchen of the seven-bedroom, five-bathroom apartment building, occurred around 7:55 p.m.

“I feel her heart ‘brek’ because she could no longer go to the sea or feed her cats. She loved those animals, she called them her grandchildren and fed them three times a day,” said one man in the area, who requested anonymity.

He said Cole had a sister who died in her 90s but no other family he knew of in Barbados, adding that she had family in Trinidad who had stayed with her at times.

Another man said the sea and her cats were Cole’s two loves.

“She used to go to the sea every morning. She also had a cat that called she ‘gran-gran’ when it was hungry; that’s what she said. She was a nice lady and people still come here to feed the cats,” he said.

He said Cole’s father founded Parkinson Memorial School and she was a former secretary at Christ Church Foundation. (CA)
