Members of the Royal Barbados Police Force were this afternoon called in to restore order at an emergency meeting of the National Council of the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW).

There were reports of a fracas during the meeting in which some attendees came to high words.

Police were called thereafter to bring order.

There was a strong show of support by police and they are still there looking into the matter and keeping the peace at the union.

The meeting was called to address governance issues affecting the body.

Last week, member Natalie Murray submitted a petition signed by more than 135 members seeking to make current president Akanni McDowall head of the union. Earlier today, both Murray and McDowall called on union leadership to hold a meeting and address the issue. (CLM)
