Recently elected president of the Barbados Boxing Association, Dr Melissa Branford-Jones, has prescribed COVID-19 vaccination to boxers as well as the wider sporting community to facilitate a safe and swift return to competition.

Speaking to Sun Sport about a possible resumption of boxing competition, Branford-Jones pointed out that many boxers and other athletes of various disciplines had a negative attitude towards vaccination.

In her view, this could stall a return to normalcy for the sports industry.

“Many of our boxers do not want to be vaccinated and that is an issue,” she said. “The boxers and other athletes, I think, are heavily influenced by social media. Especially in contact sports, though we cannot force people to be vaccinated, it will limit what we can do to some degree if they are not.” (NM)
