Society as a whole must come up with a way to stem the rising tide of firearm offences.
So said Acting Justice Wanda Blair as she dealt with a self-confessed gunman in the No. 5A Supreme Court yesterday.
“It is of concern to the court that although the public is aware of the penalties which offences of this nature attract, yet persons are acquiring guns and walking with them as accessories. This has to stop,” she declared.
“As a society, we have to examine the message being sent to our young people and come up with new ideas as to how to stem the flow of guns and, by extension, stop the violence in this country. It is not okay to have a gun,” the judge said.
She made the comments as she ordered Kyle Tito Wesley Lovell to pay fines totalling $30 000 for an illegal gun and ammunition.
