Tropical Storm Elsa less than 200 miles off Barbados

At 2 a.m., the centre of Tropical Storm Elsa was located near latitude 12.1N longitude 57.2W or about 175 miles (280km) eastsoutheast of Barbados.

Maximum sustained winds are near 50 miles per hour (85km/h) with higher gusts, and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 140 miles (220 km) mainly to the north of the centre.

Strong winds are likely to start from as early as 4 or 5 a.m. Friday.

Elsa is currently moving towards the west-northwest (290 degrees) at 26 mph (43km/h) and this motion is expected to continue during the next few days.

On its current forecast track, the centre of Tropical Storm Elsa should pass about 20 miles (33km) to the south of Barbados on Friday morning.

Rainfall accumulations of 6 to 8 inches are forecast across Barbados on Friday and watches or warnings for flash-flooding may be issued.

The tropical storm warning remains in effect.

A tropical-storm warning is issued when sustained winds of 34 to 63 knots (39–73 mph or 63– 18kmh) associated with a tropical storm or hurricane are forecast to affect Barbados within 36 hours, in this case, the very early hours of Friday morning.
