Roseau – Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit late Friday announced a weekend curfew as Dominica registered more than 100 new cases of the coronavirus (COVID-19), over the past 48 hours.

In a radio and television broadcast, Skerrit said President Charles Savin had amended the State of Emergency regulations to allow for the curfew which began at 6 p.m. Friday and will end at 5 a.m. on Monday.

Dominica had registered several clusters of the virus following two activities held on the outskirts of the capital late last month.

The Prime Minister then urged everyone to be responsible and to continue to follow the protocols aimed at curbing the spread of the virus.

In his brief broadcast, Skerrit said that 90 per cent of the more than 200 people who tested positive for the virus since last weekend had failed to be vaccinated.

He said while the vaccine is not a cure, it prevents people from getting very sick, and from being hospitalised.

”I ask you to please get the vaccine. It is available for everybody. Get your household vaccinated,” Skerrit as he urged Dominicans to stay home this weekend.

He said only essential workers would be allowed out during the weekend and people going for the vaccine should walk with the necessary identification documents so as not to be arrested.

Skerrit also praised the various health care workers, whom he said were starting their jobs from as early as 7 a.m. in an effort to provide vaccines and do contact tracing.
