TOKYO – A late surge put the United States (US) at the top of the medals table yesterday as the Americans closed the book on the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

The United States won more gold medals and more medals overall than any other country at the Games, which ended with the closing ceremony wrapping up two weeks of competition overshadowed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

A total of 626 athletes competed for the US, capturing 39 gold, 41 silver and 33 bronze medals for a grand total of 113 medals in 28 different sports, a decline since the Rio Games, when they picked up 46 golds and 121 medals overall.

Overall, 257 members of Team USA won a medal, including 164 women and 93 men. (Reuters/CNN)
