The Ministry of Education has been urged to review the long established metrics by which school principals are chosen, as the leadership of some schools is being blamed for the drop in the standard of education over the years.
This admonition comes from Barbados’ Chief Justice Sir Patterson Cheltenham, who was speaking in his capacity as the outgoing chairman of The Lodge School, during the unveiling of a mural at the St John school yesterday.
The Chief Justice also contended that school populations, especially at the secondary level, were way too high to guarantee the type of specialised attention students needed.
Speaking from his experience as chairman at The Lodge School for 27 years, he noted that the rural school had to claw its way back in terms of its reputation as a top secondary school, a situation for which he squarely blames poor leadership in the past. (CLM)
