It is now official; the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) will be getting a new president, when the largest public sector trade union holds its election of executive officers today.

Following on from his announcement via a press conference last Saturday, embattled two-time incumbent Akani McDowall officially submitted his withdrawal from the race to the NUPW secretariat yesterday.

Officials at the NUPW confirmed that they received the written confirmation from McDowall just around midday. This now paves the way for a head-to-head presidential race between Kimberley Agard and Fabian Jones.

The Daily Nation contacted both Jones and Agard, who described the lead-up to the election, which has been marred by court hearings and accusations of political interference, as challenging. (CLM)
