NUPW probing QEH guards’ termination

The axing of at least four security guards has caused the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) to step into an industrial dispute at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) yesterday.

Acting General Secretary Wayne Walrond told the DAILY NATION the NUPW visited the Martindale’s Road health institution yesterday where it was revealed that four of the nine security officers earmarked for termination had received letters ending their employment.

He said they had only been recruited earlier this year.

“The level of termination is concerning for the union. They question the coincidence that those who were terminated would have joined the NUPW. If this is proven to be true, this is a violation of the Trade Union Act which speaks to employees not being adversely impacted because of their association with a trade union,” he said. (RA)
