Police destroyed more than 11 000 marijuana trees at Portvale Sugar Factory, Blowers, St James on Saturday.

Officer in charge of crime in the Southern Division, acting assistant superintendent Anthony Warner, said border patrols were forcing criminals to grow more marijuana locally.

“We are creating this with our continued partnership with border security officers, who are very effective. The efforts of agencies such as the Coast Guard, the [police] Marine Patrol and Customs have been effective in [reducing] drugs coming in and forcing some people to grow the drugs locally which results in us seeing an increase in the number of marijuana plants we are seizing locally,” he said.

The trees were taken from various areas in the southern division, in particular districts B and C, over the course of three to four months and were incinerated at the sugar factory. (CA)
