Manslayer gets eight years

The then 16-year-old who responded to advances of a 39-year-old homosexual by striking him with a brick and hitting him with a stick was sentenced to eight years in prison for manslaughter when he returned to the No. 2 Supreme Court yesterday.

However, Raffique Vincent Murray, now 21, will serve 139 days after deductions, including the almost five years he spent on remand, were made.

Murray, of Sinckler Road, Haggatt Hall, St Michael, was originally accused of murdering David Delisle Harewood, who had no fixed place of abode, on October 3, 2016. He, however, pleaded guilty to the lesser count of unlawfully killing him – manslaughter – on the same date.

Murray was represented by attorney Safiya Moore, while Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Alliston Seale appeared for the Crown.

Justice Randall Worrell told the manslayer his offence could only be dealt with by a custodial sentence. He determined that ten years was an appropriate starting point. (HLE)
