Should 50 per cent of the targets set at the just concluded 15th Session of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD-15) be achieved, then Barbados’ historic hosting of the four-day conference could truly be considered a success.
This is the view of Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, who made it clear that her tenure as president of UNCTAD for the next three years is going to be about following through on the key agreements targeting the vulnerabilities of lesser developed countries (LDCs) and small island developing states (SIDS).
Responding to questions during the final press conference of the event, the Prime Minister outlined several areas which she considered mission-critical. She explained that topping the list were transport cost and logistics, which have increased the cost of doing business across the globe.
“Right now, there is a shortage of containers for which people have to pay a premium to book a shipping date and reserve a container even before you pay the shipping cost. We need to deconstruct and reconstruct all of these things and see whether there is a more effective way of doing it,” Mottley said. (CLM)
