Offshore sector under fire

Barbados’ offshore sector is once again coming under international scrutiny with last Monday’s explosive release of what is being called Pandora’s Papers by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ).

The ICIJ has published a massive 11.9 million files from 14 offshore service providers, including Barbados, in the biggest ever leak of offshore data, revealing where world leaders, politicians, corporate leaders, as well as actors and sportsmen, hide money, property and other assets.

The files collected over five years also expose how some of the most powerful people in the world – including more than 330 politicians from 90 countries – use secret offshore companies to stash wealth.

The ICIJ which released the Panama Papers in 2016, which also leaked millions of offshore accounts, is calling the Pandora Papers, the broadest collaboration in journalism history, with the involvement of some 600 journalists in 117 countries and territories. (MB)
