‘Durable’ prefab homes

Government is standing behind its decision to import 150 prefabricated houses from China, done in partnership with East West Building Solutions (Barbados).

Yesterday, following a donation of building material by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Bridgetown to his ministry, held at Grantley Adams Industrial Park, Christ Church, Minister of Housing, Lands and Maintenance Dr William Duguid said the houses were “good and sound”, and not inferior to the steel frame houses built in Barbados.

He was responding to comments by president of the Barbados Association of Professional Engineers (BAPE), Trevor Browne, who recently questioned if the houses met the local building code requirements and if they were durable enough to sustain the island’s conditions.

“The houses are very capable and able to be here in Barbados; there is no risk of corrosion. Our National Housing Corporation (NHC) engineer would have assessed them and has made it clear. That kind of technology of using steel frames cladded with a concrete board is already available in Barbados,” he said. (SB)
