Barbados yesterday extended the public health emergency to continue battling the COVID-19 pandemic.

The emergency order was passed through majority vote in the House of Assembly, when 25 Government MPs and the Leader of the Opposition all said ‘aye’ to a resolution tabled by Minister of Health and Wellness Jeffrey Bostic.

He said the extension was simply for the country to keep things in place so public health authorities can do what is necessary to keep Barbadians safe during the pandemic.

The current order ends on October 23, but was dealt with yesterday because the House of Assembly’s next sitting will be on October 26. The new emergency order will run until March next year.

Bostic said none of us knows “when this thing will end. We don’t know when the next variant will be at our doorsteps. We have to be able to manage, and to move from one particular strategy to another, and that is something we’ve had to do within recent times as we continue to deal with the impact of the Delta variant.” (BA)
