In-service training for 38

Chief Justice Sir Patterson Cheltenham has roped in the best legal minds on the island to train new lawyers as he issued a warning that attorneys who dip into client’s funds will get no sympathy.

Following through on his promise a week ago when he pledged to find a way to plug that hole in their training, Sir Patterson  yesterday announced the Benchmark Initiative – a series of training workshops put on by the Barbados Bar Association that brings together Sir David Simmons, Sir Richard Cheltenham, Sir Elliott Mottley, the Director of Public Prosecutions Donna Babb-Agard, QC, retired judge Christopher Blackman, Queen’s Counsel Anthony Audain and the Chief Justice himself.

One of the topics is Ethical Considerations In The Real World – an area which he said was an integral part of any continuing education.

“Client funds are by definition not lawyers’ funds. Full accounting must be given at all times for funds entrusted. Defaulting attorneys must expect no sympathy for dereliction of duty. At its core it raises a simple question – are you fit to be a member of the legal profession?” (HLE)
