Officials are promising that the proposed South Coast Water Reclamation Project will deliver more water of better quality.
It will also go a far way in preventing any recurrence of sewage spills like what occurred on the South Coast a few years ago.
These were among the benefits outlined from an environmental impact study the Barbados Water Authority (BWA) set in motion a year ago aimed at revolutionising the South Coast Sewage Treatment Plant into a water resource recovery facility.
All this was revealed at a virtual BWA town hall meeting last Wednesday when various aspects of the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment for the project were presented to stakeholders as part of the BWA’s national consultation process before embarking on the new mission.
One of the principal international consultants on the project is Pedro Bettencourt, of the firm Nemus, which operates in areas of environmental planning, development and public policies, and sustainability in Europe, Africa and South America.
He said the project will have positive effects on climate change resilience, ecology and socio-economics, while actively contributing to the general development of the south of the island. (SNR)
