Opposition leader Bishop Joseph Atherley has showered praise on outgoing St Michael North Member of Parliament Ronald Toppin, saying he was one who “strongly and properly connected” to the people he represented.

Commenting on Toppin’s announcement last Wednesday that he was departing elective politics after 27 years as an MP,  Atherley, a former Barbados Labour Party minister, said his former Cabinet colleague also made significant contributions to the country.

The leader of the People’s Party for Democracy and Development said Toppin sought to do his best to bring the effects of any Government policy or spending to his constituents, who rewarded him with success at the polls in six successive elections.

“I don’t think that is easy to achieve in an urban constituency unless you’re a person extremely well endowed with finances, backed by finances and, in addition to that, you are prepared to use those finances perhaps in ways which you legally should not use them in order to court political support.
