By the end of this week, cop killer Applon Parris will know his fate.
Justice Randall Worrell is expected to deliver his sentence in the non-capital murder of Constable Shayne Welch when the matter resumes on Friday.
Parris, of Taitts Road, Brittons Hill, St Michael, had previously pleaded guilty to killing Welch on March 26, 2018.
When the matter reconvened virtually in the No. 2 Supreme Court last Friday, prosecution and defence counsel continued their arguments on sentencing.
During a previous sitting, Director of Public Prosecutions Donna Babb-Agard QC asked that Parris be given between 30 to 35 years in jail, noting that defence counsel Safiya Moore’s request for 20 to 25 years before deductions was too low.
Babb-Agard said even with allowances given, non-capital offences could not be treated the same way as manslaughter offences because the category was quite different.
Parris had inflicted 19 stab wounds to Welch, five of which were to the back, after he found his estranged wife at the lawman’s home and went into a “blind rage”. (RA)
