A 74-year-old man passed away tonight after his car was involved in a collision with a police sports utility vehicle.
The driver, a St James man, was the sole occupant of the car. The collision occurred around 8:30 p.m. at the junction of Fairfield, Black Rock and Deacons in St Michael.
Police public relations officer Acting Inspector Rodney Inniss said the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
His death has taken the number of road fatalities to 16 from 15 accidents so far this year.
The two officers who were the occupants of the police vehicle were taken for medical attention.
Inniss said one police officer complained of an abrasion to the left elbow and pain to the left foot, while the other “was quite shaken up”.
Family members of the deceased man were on the scene. Curious onlookers had also gathered earlier as emergency personnel tried to free the man, who had been trapped in the car.
Two fire tenders and seven officers responded to the incident.
Police said the name of the deceased will be released once permission is granted by the family.
Investigations are ongoing.
