Prime Minister Mia Amor Motley wants Justices of the Peace (JPs) in Barbados to play a key role under the republic.
“You have assumed a leadership role in this nation as of this afternoon, and that leadership role requires for you to be able to help us build out this nation by being able to keep those aspects of our society, those aspects of our culture, those aspects of how we function as families and as communities, above a certain level.
“Such that we do not see the degeneration that regrettably too many have come to speak about since the passage of our formal Independence in 1966,” she told 436 new JPs being sworn into office at the Gymnasium of the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex.
It was the first group of JPs to be sworn in since 2019, and the oath they took yesterday was an indication of the changes that continue to be made as Barbados transitions as a republic.
The historic ceremony took place two weeks after Barbados assumed that status. It saw President The Most Honourable Dame Sandra Mason administering the oath of office, recited by her and repeated by the JPs. The group said in unison: “I do swear that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Barbados according to law. So help me God. (GC)
