Barbadians are being urged to be more wary of scams during the Yuletide season. The warning came yesterday from Minister in the Ministry of Finance Ryan Straughn.

The economist said that in recent weeks a lot of fake news and false claims were abound in Barbados, all aimed at deceptively accessing the personal financial details of Barbadians.

“The schemes are out there. You need to show restraint,” he urged citizens during a nationally televised address.

He referenced one “fake news” item which spoke of his involvement in an endeavour about bitcoin generator.

“I have no knowledge of it. The extent of these schemes is to capture your personal information and to defraud you. Don’t provide people with any personal information,” he cautioned.

Straughn also advised Barbadians to continue acting responsibly since Barbados would be actively reviewing all protocols and directives in the next four to 12 weeks with the aim of eventually removing the current curfew entirely, and opening up the economy in full.

He added that under the Barbados Economic Recovery and Transformation programme, the Government would continue to pay its debtors and settle arrears, such as the more than $300 million owed to people whose land had been compulsorily acquired.

He added that they would continue to add resources where necessary to ensure the country was properly placed to keep fighting the COVID-19 pandemic. (BA)
