GEORGETOWN, Guyana – President Irfaan Ali congratulated Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley on her political party’s victory in Wednesday’s general elections, saying that her return to office would allow them to move forward with previously discussed plans.

In a statement issued on Thursday afternoon, on the heels of the Barbados Labour Party’s (BLP) second consecutive 30-0 victory at the polls, Ali said he anticipated a continued working relationship.

“Your re-election provides us with the opportunity to concretise the plans and programmes that we have discussed to build on the cooperation between Guyana and Barbados,” he said.

“I look forward as well, to our continued collaboration at the regional level, as we endeavour to advance our integration process and to secure the benefits that our peoples deserve.”

The two leaders engaged in bilateral discussions in Bridgetown early last October.

They spoke about a new paradigm in relations between their countries that would allow citizens of both nations to benefit from an expanded programme of cooperation. Several initiatives were discussed to advance cooperation and investment in the areas of agriculture and fisheries, oil and gas, mining, forestry, tourism, the hospitality industry, transportation, housing and water resources.

Later in the month, officials from the Guyana Office for Investment (GO-Invest) met with a high-level delegation from Barbados, led by Minister of Housing, Lands and Maintenance Dr William Duguid, to discuss and promote Guyana’s investment opportunities. (CMC)
