Share post:

A flood watch was issued for Barbados at 10 a.m. today.

Barbados Meteorological Services said this alert message will be updated at 6 p.m. or sooner if conditions warrant.

A flood watch is issued when the conditions are favourable for flooding within the next 48 hours. It does not mean that flooding will occur, but it is possible.

A trough system has been affecting Barbados, starting overnight and bringing isolated maximum accumulations of up to 50mm in moderate to heavy showers. Throughout today, conditions remain favourable for further accumulations of 25 to 50mm of rainfall.

Personnel of Barbados Meteorological Services will continue to closely monitor this weather feature.

Residents and visitors should be prepared for the following possibilities: Significant runoff from higher elevation; significant soil erosion is likely on exposed or scarred land surfaces; large water settlements on roads and fields and significant adjustments to water levels of existing water bodies (ponds and so on).

There is the possibility of significant delays on traffic routes with some roads likely impassable. Large objects or debris from higher elevations may also become embedded within fast-moving water flows. Significant flooding at the foot of hillsides and coastal roads is possible.
