Government will soon be reviewing the drawing board to complete a review of the demerit system in the Road Traffic Regulations in an effort to clamp down on lawlessness in the public service vehicle (PSV) sector.
This was revealed by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport and Works Santia Bradshaw during the Estimates Debate in the House of Assembly yesterday. She fielded questions and heard comments from parliamentary colleagues about the poor behaviour still being displayed on the roads by some PSV operators.
Bradshaw, who is acting as Prime Minister because Mia Amor Mottley is away attending the CARICOM Heads of Government meeting in Belize, admitted the previous amendment to the Road Traffic Act, which had introduced demerit points aimed at bringing discipline to the sector, had not worked well and had no teeth in the way it was structured.
“We are proposing to bring back to Cabinet a revised regulation which, once passed, will allow the Transport Authority to implement not only the standards and training necessary for the drivers and operators, but also where there are breaches, to be able to treat to those breaches and offences in a way that can be upheld in law. The aim is to correct a lot of the lawlessness that we see on our roads and to protect the road users.” (BA)
