NCPTA: Use clips as teachable moments

Two remorseful students caught on social media twerking and dancing in uniform and on the school premises have apologised, but one organisation is questioning the recent flare-up of such behaviour in three schools.

Last week, students from three secondary schools – one in St Michael and the others in rural parishes – caused an uproar after the videos with suggestive behaviour and vaping (using an electronic cigarette) were uploaded to the social media platform Tik Tok and circulated on WhatsApp.

In the apology, the students in St Michael said sorry to their school, principal, family and colleagues for the embarrassment and disrespect caused.

One girl said: “This has taught me to be very careful in choosing my friends and allowing my friends to influence me in the wrong way.” She also promised not to allow a repeat of the action.

Another said: “I sincerely apologise for the embarrassment I have caused to everyone. I did that video never knowing the damage it would cause . . . . I am truly sorry and promise that I would not cause such a thing to happen again. I accept the consequence of my action. Please forgive me.”

The Barbados National Council of Parent-Teacher Associations, while questioning the sudden and unacceptable deviant behaviour, urged parents to use the incidents as teachable moments for their children. (RA)
