LONDON – Barbadian-born teenager Jacob Bethell was signed by Welsh Fire for £30 000 while West Indies white-ball captain Kieron Pollard was snapped up by London Spirit as their number one pick for the second edition of the Hundred, which starts in August.

Bethell, 18, a top order left-handed batsman, who bowls left-arm spin, recently turned out for his adopted country England at the Under-19 World Cup in the Caribbean after featuring in a handful of games across all three formats for Warwickshire last year.

Quite unexpected

“It was quite unexpected to get a Hundred contract,” Bethell said. “I put my name in not thinking much would come from it. I guess the Under-19s World Cup was a big platform that pushed some of our names forward, playing tournament cricket in pressure situations.”

Bethell, who made his mark with a 42-ball 88 against South Africa’s under-19s in Antigua, and is still studying for his A-levels – business and physical education – said his ultimate goal, though, is to play Test cricket. (EZS/CMC)
