An attorney at law has strong concerns about the lone electricity company asking for a rate increase, charging that they were hiding pertinent information about the rate hike.

Tricia Watson, a guest on Starcom’s Down To Brass Tacks yesterday, was speaking on the upcoming rate increase hearing and noted that in 2009 the company talked about  the inefficiency of the steam plant, the need to retire that it and “were actually quite explicit about the dangers that Barbados was facing from not retiring that steam plant”.

“They met with the FTC and said we need x amount of dollars and in regards to the steam plant we are going to retire that and replace it with  medium-speed diesel engines and those will come out to about $150 million.”

Watson said based on that, the rate hike was given, but the steam plant was never replaced and that has raised several questions. (NS)
