Appleby beach access blocked

Erosion has affected the access and usage of another beach.

General manager at the National Conservation Commission (NCC), Ryan Als, confirmed yesterday that they were forced to block the beach access next to Crystal Cove by Elegant Hotels in Appleby, St James, along Highway 1.

“Because of the high swells, the sea eroded the whole beachfront and the steps were washed away. It’s dangerous to go down there so we blocked it off. So until we can get a solution, we cannot allow the public to traverse it,” he said.

Als said they attempted to rectify the problem but it turned out to be larger than anticipated.

Challenging

“We tried to fix it, but the waves were moving away the cement so we were basically placing cement in the water. It’s a bigger project than we can handle, so to fix the steps you have to fix the whole beach. NCC doesn’t fix the beaches; that is the Coastal Zone and the property owners.”
