Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley says it is time for the Caribbean to find secure ways of feeding its people.
Delivering opening remarks at the Agri-Investment Forum And Expo which started in Guyana yesterday, she said the war between Russia and the Ukraine had crystallised just how vulnerable the few million people in the Caribbean were, based on the effect of wheat and other food restrictions put in place by the global powerhouses which export that commodity and its by-products.
“We are here together at a most critical time in our history,” she told CARICOM colleagues gathered in the capital of Georgetown. “It is expected there will be more restrictions by governments to safeguard their food supply from soaring inflation.”
Mottley said Russia, Ukraine, India and even Argentina had recently stopped sending important food products and groceries outside its borders for the foreseeable future. (BA)
