In 2021, over 2 000 houses were damaged by a freak storm and Hurricane Elsa.

It’s now the first month of the 2022 Atlantic Hurricane Season and many of those houses are still to be rebuilt. But how can Barbados make its housing stock more resilient to adverse weather systems?

Nation News’ Akeel Lovell spoke with president of the Barbados Association of Professional Engineers, Lt. Col. Trevor Browne, as well as architectural designer, Alyssa Gibbons, about how a mandatory building code could save thousands of houses from being damaged or destroyed and in the process save the country millions of dollars.
