The Women in Action Network has given Minister of Home Affairs Wilfred Abrahams seven days, starting today, to make known the findings of last year’s investigation into complaints at the Government Industrial School (GIS) in Barrows, St Lucy, and a departmental inquiry which was to be completed on June 15.
Spokesperson for the group, Tempu Nefertari, speaking at a press conference yesterday at the Praise Dance Academy, Collymore Rock, St Michael, said the time for promises had long past.
“In June of 2021, in addressing these allegations of abuse by the girls at GIS, the minister is reported as saying that every single complaint on record will be investigated fully, and we will prepare a report and make a report to the public. Minister, can we have that report first?” she asked.
“We have made our position clear: change has to come. We’re not going to stop praying, marching, advocating until change comes. We are giving the minister seven days, until the seventh day of the seventh month, to address the critical areas in his report on the inquiry undertaken. If we get no response from the minster by that time, we will be forced to ask him to respond to specific allegations that we have on record from former wards and staff,” she added. (RA)
