Schoolchildren stepping for health

Deputy chief education officer Joy Adamson said too many schoolchildren became more sedentary during the pandemic to the point where parents complained their school uniforms no longer fit them when it was time to return to face-to-face classes.

This was why some schoolchildren around Barbados “got to stepping” as part of the Ministry of Education’s Active Kids Initiative, racking up tens of millions of steps within four months.

Yesterday, the successful participants were awarded as part of a prize giving ceremony at the Ministry of Education, Constitution Road, St Michael.

Adamson said youth were leading less active lives in general noting the matter became more pronounced over the past two years.

“The Active Kids Initiative is one of our non-curricular activities we have been engaged in to encourage students to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Since we have been in lockdown, we’ve been in front our devices, our computers, our laptops, sitting down a lot more and it has forced us to be in a sedentary mode.” (CA)
