The Alliance Owners of Public Transport (AOPT) is calling for an urgent meeting with Government over gas prices.
Communications, information and marketing officer Mark A. Haynes complained yesterday that the “astronomical” price of gas at the pump may result in some operators hitting the brakes on the sector.
“This situation is rather debilitating and places operators under enormous stress. This situation is unsustainable and untenable and cannot continue unabated. If it continues like this, many will be forced to put down their vehicles and then what will happen to the travelling public? The Transport Board cannot handle it all alone but this can be avoided. We are calling on Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, the Minister of Transport Santia Bradshaw and Cabinet on a whole to meet with us to take part in a national discourse,” he said.
Haynes said the recent cap on value added tax (VAT) for gas prices was “grossly inadequate” and called for a further adjustment, as well as for an change in the excise tax for fuel used by public service vehicles (PSVs). (CA)
