Return of the Kon

The Kon is back – AnimeKon that is.

After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, AnimeKon: Return Of The Kon! took place on Saturday at Harrison College.

The celebration of pop culture was scaled back this year but executive director Omar Kennedy said this was just the beginning of greatness.

“During the shutdown we were inundated with calls asking to bring back AnimeKon or to just a small kon, but there is no such thing as a small kon – we just couldn’t do it under the restrictions. AnimeKon takes about 12 to 18 months to plan properly so given the time we had to quickly look for a more open air venue as the last thing we want is to be the cause of a super spreader event,” he said.

Thus, AnimeKon shifted from the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre.

Kennedy said some of their prior exhibitors had fallen on hard times and opted out, but they provided them with free passes to come and check it out anyway. He added they were on the cusp of something new. (CA)
