Chairperson of the St Michael Parish Independence Committee Cherelle Griffith is encouraging young people to start businesses of their own rather than waiting for handouts.
“Going out on our walk-throughs, church visits, school visits, we find that a lot of young people are home and unemployed, hence why we conceptualised St Michael Safe: Sustaining All Families Through Entrepreneurship and Education, our parish project to encourage people not to sit down at home and wait for handouts. People are of the opinion that politicians have to give them everything, but you can do something for yourself,” she told the Daily Nation.
Griffith was speaking during the St Michael Parish Independence Committee’s first community business fair at the YMCA, Pinfold Street, The City on Saturday.
“We wanted to have an avenue for small business persons to come on and to network, showcase their businesses, so that’s what we’re here doing,” she said.
Griffith said while the day had been a bit slow, overall she thought the vendors who came out to display their goods had a good experience based on her interactions with them, and they were looking forward to the second fair. (RA)
