North Sound – West Indies Women suffered a five-run defeat under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern Method in the first One-day International on Monday to fall behind 1-0 in the three-match series at the Vivian Richards Cricket Ground.
In a rain-marred contest reduced to 35 overs a side due to a protracted delay at the start, the Windies Women gathered 168 for seven with Chinelle Henry top scoring with 44, batting at seven, and Kyshona Knight hitting 36.
In reply, Player-of-the-Match Suzie Bates top scored with 51 from 65 balls and Amelia Kerr chipped in with an important 47.
West Indies Women’s captain Hayley Matthews captured three for 28 with her off-spin and was the pick of her side’s bowling, but when bad light ended play abruptly, the visitors were 159 for five off 33 overs and ahead on the scoring rate.
“Unfortunately, bad light gave New Zealand the result, but we have two more games to look forward to, so we have to pick ourselves up and keep moving,” Henry said post-match.
This was the first match for the Windies Women since the sudden retirement of Barbadian all-rounder Deandra Dottin.
